Tobias Associates offers the industry products such as densitometers, opacity meters, Mottle Testers and a powerful ink key presetting system called EPLEX.
Today’s printing companies are presented with a variety of options and associated decisions to cost effectively move into the digital age. One of the many areas of interest is CTP, or computer to plate technology.
Tobias Associates is now offering a flexible solution in this arena called EPLEX. It has long been acknowledged that an effective method of reducing pressroom makeready time is to preset the ink key fountains. Makeready paper–waste and time–waste can be extreme and Tobias is committed to reduce this substantially with EPLEX. Exact ink key positions prior to startup can save tons of paper. The EPLEX system is the link that allows printers with non–CIP3 compliant press consoles, the ability to make them CIP3 compliant. EPLEX converts CIP3 files into the format necessary to preset the presses and consoles such as Heidelberg, Hantscho, Perretta, EPG, Baker Perkins, Mitsubishi, and Telecolors are all candidates for this upgrade.
Tobias also has developed for the printing industry their popular scanning densitometer called the SDT. The SDT Scanning densitometer provides the quality control measurements necessary for proper ink and color control, including solid ink density and dot gain, by measuring a colorbar. Colorbars as narrow as 1/16” (1.6mm) can be read by the SDT. A typical scan of the colorbar takes only 10 seconds. As the SDT scanning head travels across the press sheet, it strokes the colorbar VERTICALLY to determine bar position and skew (this is a patented function called ‘seek and find’). On the scanning head’s return trip, this information is used to continuously correct for bar position, resulting in precise measurements along the centerline of the colorbar.
Handheld densitometers are also a part of the Tobias line. Both reflection and transmission units will help the operator control their process thus producing consistently controlled results. Tobias supports all its products world–wide with its own sales and service department based in Ivyland, Pennsylvania, USA.
The Tobias website can be found at www.densitometer.com.
